Peter Sagan si ritira dalle corse su strada alla fine della stagione per concentrarsi sulla mountain bike, in vista delle Olimpiadi del 2024. L’annuncio ieri, venerdì 27 gennaio, da San Juan (Argentina).
Una notizia che ha sorpreso prima di tutto gli appassionati e i tifosi del ciclista slovacco anche se era plausibile che questo momento prima o poi sarebbe arrivato. I segnali c’erano tutti.
“Questo è il mio ultimo anno sulla strada da professionista” ha dichiarato in conferenza stampa il tre volte campione del mondo (2015, 2016, 2017), vincitore in carriera – tra l’altro – del Giro delle Fiandre 2016 e della Parigi-Roubaix nel 2018.
“L’anno prossimo rimarrò con Total Energies per dedicarmi alla qualificazione ai Giochi Olimpici del 2024 in mountain bike”, ha proseguito il corridore, 35esimo ai Giochi di Rio nel 2016, iscritto questa settimana al Tour de San Juan, in Argentina.
Nel 2024 “farò alcune gare minori” ha detto Sagan che non ha più intenzione di schierarsi nel World Tour il prossimo anno e si ritirerà dallo sport dopo l’evento olimpico di mountain bike.
In 13 anni di carriera professionistica Sagan ha vinto sette volte la maglia verde del Tour de France tra il 2012 e il 2019, quattro tappe della Vuelta e due al Giro d’Italia, conquistando anche la maglia ciclamino nell’edizione 2021.
Sagan, il primo dei moderni
Come dice bene Giovanni Battistuzzi su Il Foglio Sagan ha portato il ciclismo in un’altra dimensione: ha dimostrato che il pedalare non era solo una grande fatica, era anche, se non soprattutto, una forma di divertimento, una gran gioia.
In questo ha spianato la strada alla nouvelle vague dell’arte pedalatoria dei nostri giorni interpretata dai vari Pogačar, Pidcock, Van Aerts e Van der Poel.
Da Sagan ci si poteva aspettare qualsiasi cosa, vincente e giocherellone, a volte fuori misura. Ma a un simpatico discolaccio si può perdonare quasi tutto.

Peter Sagan retires (but not completely)
Peter Sagan is retiring from road racing at the end of the season to focus on mountain biking ahead of the 2024 Olympics. The announcement yesterday, Friday, January 27, from San Juan, Argentina.

“Next year I will stay with Total Energies to devote myself to qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in mountain biking,” continued the rider, 35th at the Rio Games in 2016, entered this week in the Tour de San Juan, Argentina.
In 2024, “I will do some minor races,” said Sagan, who no longer plans to line up in the World Tour next year and will retire from the sport after the Olympic mountain bike event.
